Sepia tinting

A colour copier will pick up the sepia tint of an old photograph quite well, but if you only have black and white copies you can imitate the effect of sepia tinting using a strong solution of instant coffee in hot water. Dampen a cotton pad with the solution and wipe it onto the black and white photocopy. Leave to dry completely before cropping – if it wrinkles place it under a heavy book overnight to flatten it.

Cropping

Cropping can transform a poorly composed or boring picture into a stronger image by focussing the eye. L-crops allow you to try different versions of the crop before beginning to trim or frame the image. They are usually made from black cardboard, but a neutral grey will also work well. Avoid strong colours, as they will influence colours in the image you want to crop.
